STYLE GUIDE
This guide is meant to be just that, a guide. There are no hard rules to what you can and cannot wear. I want you to feel confident and beautiful in whatever you choose to wear!
Now that that’s out of the way, I will say that if you like a lot of instagram images where people are dressed a certain way and looking all elegant or free and wearing dresses that seem to drape perfectly, THIS is your time to be that girl! I will absolutely encourage you to use this as an excuse to dress up! I don’t know about you, but I don’t get to play dress up very often anymore, so I’ll take it when I can(even though I can’t say it’s always fun to put in the work🤪)!
With all that in mind, let’s get started! I’m going to try and keep this concise and to the point.
Picture looking back at your images, they’re hanging on your walls, you’ve posted them to instagram and Facebook and all of your friends are telling you how awesome you all look!
What are you wearing? Probably something polished and put together. You look awesome just like all of those other friends and families and influencers you see posting photos of their families/with their significant other etc.
I always encourage this to be a time for moms/brides whoever to stand out. This is your chance to have the main stylish fit and match your family to you accordingly. If you have a little girl or two it would be awesome to have them in dresses and dressed up too. Dresses- I definitely recommend dresses! If you’re not generally a dress person but you’re open to trying something fun and new I would encourage you to give it a shot! At least try a few on and see if they make you feel confident.
2. Try not to be too matching. I know it can be difficult to figure out which colors go well together, but going for the same colors is generally a bad idea. Muted Colors are very in and I highly recommend having some simple neutral colors. Like the warmth of my photos? wear some warm colors or at least plain and simple. The more colors you incorporate the more colorful your images will be, so if you’d like to avoid that then stick to some neutral colors! I know it seems cool in theory to all wear the same color (and don’t get me wrong, this CAN work in certain circumstances!), but we don’t need to be the backstreet boys.
3. I will always tell you to look for clothing items that are made from natural materials because generally they often photograph better, this can be things such as linen or cotton, rayon isn’t usually a problem either, but we’re trying to avoid those shiny polyester dress up princess costumes from days of old. lol.
4. The more flow the better! Ladies, if you want to avoid wearing a dress at all costs, just try and incorporate a flowy top or some flowy pants! there are lots of fun options and flowy material adds so much texture and story to your final images!
5. Again, dress your family around you! button up or just plain T-shirts even can look amazing on the guys in your life. Let’s think neutral and muted here. Don’t feel afraid of incorporating colors, but please keep it more mellow unless you want your final images looking like the rainbow haha. Just try and stick to the same color pallet for everyone, all colors should be the same tone, warm, cool, they should compliment each other nicely!
6. Avoid stark white and bright red. This is a little more geared toward families. If you’re doing a solo shout or even a couples session then this isn’t quite as relevant but you do still want to keep these things in mind.
Ok, so white photographs very tricky. Generally it’s a good idea to stick to creams or off-whites when you’re wanting to wear whites. bright white will make you shine like there’s a spotlight coming down on you from the heavens and it will distract from the overall image and take away from anyone else involved. As well as causing your eyes to go straight to your outfit! leaving you and your family or whoever else, as an afterthought. This works for Brides but I’d advise against it unless you have a big statement you’d like to make. Same idea goes for bright red! try and keep it a little more mellow if you can, sticking to maroon or burgundy or just a solid red that isn’t too bright. However Make sure if you’re wearing red that your photo mates are wearing darker complimenting colors to your tone or you will l likely still stick out.
7. Remember that what you look like in the mirror is what your images will show. See if you have wrinkles in your clothing or unwanted bra/panty lines etc. I can fix these things for an added cost, but you’ll feel more confident and beautiful if you’re put together! Spend some time treating yourself to dressing up and looking nice. :)
8. Don’t forget the finishing touches! do your lips look dry? put something on, do a lip scrub! even if it’s just chapstick sadly these things are obvious and you don’t want to feel frumpy or bad about yourself when you see your final images. Think about jewelry. Would your dress look better with a necklace or some nice earrings? Don’t forget your ring!
Remember these photos are for YOU and or your family. Not for me or anyone else, so just make sure that YOU like what you’re wearing and it makes you feel confident and lovely, because you ARE!
You’re going to do an amazing job! Can’t wait to see you all ready to go! You’ve definitely got this!
But just remember, always feel free to message me if you get stuck! Send me photos of your options etc. and I am happy to help! 707-322-4060
